The goal of this Healthy Singer blog

It is time for a dialog about health as it relates to singing!

Whether you are a classical/opera singer like me, or into other forms of music, a singer has to be healthy first and foremost. We must develop and maintain good vocal health, using proper techniques and avoiding smoking, and excessive alcohol. We cannot be too careful when we make a living that depends on two little membrane folds (we call vocal chords) inside our throats.

It is ironic that many of us tend to have sinus or allergy problems that attack our livelihood. The symptoms always seem to flare up just when we have to perform. So we have to be careful not to hurt our voices. But what do you do?

Luckily for me I have found the New Silver Solution by Nutronix International. Since I started using it 7 months ago, I have kept my allergies in check and had no sinus infections. I have always be plagued by sinus infections, but no more. This patented formula is safe and is a great first line of defense becuase it helps the immune system do its job.

I partner it with Sub lingual B-12. Now NuRev, the Resveratrol product (that also includes Acai, Noni berry, and more) is taking the world by storm. It is the best thing since sliced bread.

Then it is important to stay hydrated and to keep you body in PH balance as well. I love the o2 Proformance Hydration for this. But introducing whole foods into your diet is one of the best things you can do in the long run. Try natural sugar, whole wheat pasta, and grains. These small changes can even shed inches from your waistline-Try NuStart- gotta look good on stage right?

All of these products come from Nutronix International. They also have a great skin care system called Atria, which I partner with Mary Kay. Wellness inside and out, is the goal.

Use your music to deal with your emotional issues during this time of year where memories and relationship issues are tough. I like to say Singer Heal Thyself.

Of course having affordable health insurance is a big issue for professional singers. I have found some sites online that give competitive quotes for several companies at a time. If you are an AGMA member, they offer discount cards for your health needs. I think they are looking for a way to help insure members in the future.

Please feel free to leave any wellness related questions here in the comment section, and let's start a conversation.

Your health insurance and the presidential campaigns

Have you lost your health insurance, or had your benefits decrease?

For the past 8 months I have been without health insurance. I had a Cobra plan, but finally had to give up on the $400. a month cost. Then when shopping for other insurance, I was turned down because of pre-existing back injuries and a occasional syncopated heart beat.
So wellness mean more to me than just a fad.

If you are following the political campaign as closely as I have, you probably have opinions on the candidates health plans. Please take the time to review them both.

Like Obama, I believe that health care is a right. However contrary to myths he is not going to force people into socialized medicine. Go to http://www.barackobama.com/issues/healthcare/
and see for yourself.

Let's make a decision to devote ourselves to prevention. I am here with you!

Aging in Wellness

Dear Fellow Baby Boomers.

People always tell me that I don't look old enough to have a grown daughter.
Well the years and a few good Creole genes have been kind to my face, but I am constantly aware that I have to be kinder to my body, because the years- and a few car accidents- have not been so kind to it. As a singer traveling around a lot, this in important.

So what are the secrets to aging in wellness?

1. Staying focused on your purpose in life, by pursuing your dreams!
2. Remembering you are not a number. Age is a fact but not a factor in happiness!
3. Eating those fattening things you like as a treat and not as a daily habit
4. Focusing on prevention of illness rather than being a hard head about your diet and then being surprised when you get sick!
5. Dancing every chance you get!
6. Rembering water is your friend!

#1. I just returned from performing in concert in Paris, a long time dream of mine. Pursuing this dream and achieving it has been fantastic and takes care of #2 as well
#3 and 4... Well this is not always easy with the Creole cooking in New Orleans, but I am doing OK with staying focused....most of the time. LOL!!!!
#5 Just had a great time dancing the other day even though a very long hot soak in the tub quickly followed!
#6 Water is indeed my friend. I am going to get some now.

But in case I am not always as diligent as I should be, I have found some products that I really like and that are having a great impact on my aging in wellness.

I just discovered in Berry Greens Boost!
1 serving of Berry Greens Boost in an 8 ounce glass of water (or you could add it to juice- I like that) has all the nutrients of 8 salads, increases your energy, mental clarity, and strengthens your immune system.
It comes in single serving packs for people on the go. It gives you lots of energy without sugar or caffeine. And if you have colon cancer in your family like I do you will want to take advantage of BG Boost's colon cleansing properties.

I wish I had BGBoost when I was in Paris, because the flight was a little challenging! But I drank it the other day and I was ready to go!! There is a great video on the website that explains it all!

So join me in my new Aging in Wellness adventure! Any suggestions you have would be greatly appreciated. What are you all doing?

Paris Success!!!

I am back from Paris! Came in late Wednesday night. Here is a picture of me and my daughter Aria- also a mezzo- who sang on the program.

Here is a little trip summary:
My first day started with a rehearsal in an historic home of a Parisian. It was a beautiful place with ornamented high ceilings, a grand piano, and a balcony overlooking the upscale Trocadero neighborhood.

All performances and church services went very well.
My concert at The American Church in Paris was well attended- almost packed!
Considering President Bush was in town blocking the roads all weekend and that there were many concerts and an opera to compete with, I am thrilled at the outcome!!! But because of Bush, I almost missed singing the Saturday Mass at St. Joseph's, and almost could not get back to my hotel after the Sunday morning Presbyterian service because we could not get across the Champs Elysees.

Considering most of what I sang was in French, and they can be tough on outsiders regarding their language, the fact that no one walked out was a win for me. LOL!!! In fact I think I made quite a few new Paris friends. God is good! We have been also talking about a future engagement. We shall see!

I recorded it for a new CD, so I am excited about that. And I even sold some of my "Hymns for New Orleans" CDs afterwards.
AND a plug for our free advertising---Someone in the audience was later online at where I also have Nutronix ads posted and she found my CD there- purchased it and sent me a note about how much she enjoyed the concert. So people all over the world do pay attention to that site.

My online business continued to grow while I was gone too. It has been a win, win!!!

Financial and Time Freedom for Performers

For singers who want to keep a flexible schedule for performances, it is not always easy. While you are building your career, you may find that there are lulls between engagements. Yet you need to have the time to practice, and learn music. Many times singers look for day jobs only to find that they have to keep their artistic engagements more than they are at work. This is why many artists are looking for ways to work from home. That's what is so great about the changes in the online industry. These changes are so powerful that many large corporations have restructured to allow employees to work from home. However the income from "at home jobs" is often insufficient, and rarely worth the time.

It is more to your advantage to spend the time building not just an online job, but instead a home based business that will pay significant residual income over time. This income can also cover health insurance premiums.

The Wellness and Skincare and Weight Loss Industries are trillion dollar industries and through network marketing companies offer great potential for large earnings,
and can travel around the world in your laptop!
If you have to work on the side why not do something that will pay you into your retirement. New enhancements have been made to the profit sharing online business called The Berry Tree and is certainly worth a look. They are giving away $500. to a lucky new member this month!

For those of you just headed to college, there are many ways to make a living in the music industry if you want singing to be a secondary career. You may want to look into Music Therapy, Music Business, and Music Education as degree alternatives. Couple that degree with computer technology classes because music has definitely gone digital!!!
